What is WinMTR and how to use it

Introduction to MTR and WinMTR

MTR stands for "My Traceroute" and is a tool used to check the path and performance of the network connection from your computer to a server. WinMTR is the Windows version of this tool and is used for troubleshooting network issues.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using WinMTR

Step 1: Downloading WinMTR
  1. Find a Trusted Source: Use a search engine to find the official WinMTR website or a trusted site like SourceForge.
  2. Download the File: Click on the download link provided on the site to download WinMTR. This will be in ZIP file format.
  3. Extract the File: Once downloaded, locate the ZIP file in your Downloads folder. Right-click on it and select "Extract All" to unpack the files to your chosen folder.

Step 2: Opening WinMTR
  1. Locate WinMTR: Navigate to the folder where you extracted the files.
  2. Run the Program: Double-click the WinMTR application icon to open it. It should look like a window with a few text boxes and buttons.

Step 3: Setting Up a Test
  1. Enter Server Information: In the box labeled "Host," type the IP address or website name you want to test. For example, if you have trouble with your SFTP connection, enter the IP address of your SFTP server. (see image)
  2. Start Testing: Click the "Start" button. This starts the monitoring process which checks each step your connection takes to reach the server. (see image)
Do not specify the port when testing!

Step 4: Viewing and Understanding Results
  • Observe the Table: Watch as the table fills with information. You'll see each "hop" or step the connection takes across the internet. It includes:
  • Hostname/IP: The address of each stop along the route.
  • Loss%: Shows if and where data is lost.
  • Sent and Recv: Number of packets sent and received.
  • Avg: Average time for responses.

Step 5: Exporting and Sharing Results
  1. Saving Data: Once you’ve gathered enough information (let it run for a few minutes), click "Stop."
  2. Export Options: Click on "Export TEXT" to save the data as a text file. You can then attach or email this file to our support desk. If you have an active live chat with us, please attach it there. You may also send it to the Serverwave Support email.

Conclusion

Using WinMTR helps identify where issues may exist when connecting to a server. If you notice problems, don’t worry – simply save and send your results to our support staff for further analysis.

Additional Tips
  • Regular Updates: Always check for the latest version to ensure the best results.
  • Multiple Tests: Sometimes it's helpful to run tests at different times to see network performance changes.
