How to fix SFTP connection issues

If you’re having trouble connecting to your server’s files using SFTP, don’t worry — this guide covers the most common causes and solutions.
Serverwave uses SFTP only (not plain FTP), which means connections must be made securely using your account credentials and the correct port.
Understanding SFTP on Serverwave
SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) is the only supported file transfer method on Serverwave. It runs over SSH (port 2022 by default), keeping your file transfers encrypted and safe.
Trying to connect with FTP will always result in a “Connection Refused” or “Authentication Failed” error.
Common Causes & Fixes
1. Connecting with FTP Instead of SFTP
If your client uses plain FTP, the connection will fail instantly because Serverwave only supports SFTP.
Fix:
- In your client, make sure to select SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol.
- Port should be set to the provided port by Serverwave (not 21).
- Reconnect using your SFTP details from the control panel.
2. SFTP Not Available Right After Stopping the Server
Due to how our system is designed, SFTP access temporarily shuts down when your server stops. It can take up to 2–3 minutes for the SFTP service to come back online after stopping or restarting your server.
Fix:
- Wait a few minutes after your server goes offline before connecting via SFTP.
- If you attempt too early, you may see “Connection Refused” or “Server Unreachable.”
3. Incorrect Login Credentials
If you enter the wrong username, password, or port, SFTP will refuse the connection.
Fix:
- Go to your Serverwave Control Panel.
- Copy your SFTP host, port, username, and password exactly as shown.
- Paste them into your SFTP client and try again.
4. Firewall or VPN Blocking the Connection
Some antivirus software or VPNs can block SSH traffic (used by SFTP).
Fix:
- Temporarily disable your VPN or firewall to test.
- Whitelist the SFTP host and port (2022).
- Reconnect after allowing access.
5. Server Is Starting or Restarting
During startup or restart, SFTP temporarily disconnects as services are reinitialized.
Fix:
- Wait until the server status in your panel shows “Running.”
- Once it’s online, reconnect — SFTP will become available again automatically.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Use SFTP, not FTP
- Check Port
- Wait 2–3 minutes after stopping the server
- Verify username and password from the panel
- Ensure your server is online
- Disable VPN/firewall temporarily
Pro Tips
- Use Saved Sessions in your SFTP client for faster reconnects.
- If you frequently upload or edit files, connect while the server is online for better stability.
- Don’t keep the connection open while restarting the server — wait for SFTP to reinitialize.
